The BAK Fellowship for Situated Practice 2021–22 was a ten-month post-academic programme of BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht, run as four research cells that worked together across distance: in Istanbul, hosted by the Istanbul Biennial Production and Research Programme at İKSV; in Jakarta, hosted by GUDSKUL; in Utrecht; and online. Prompted by the “age of pandemics”, it explored a distributed and coalitional practice among institutions with overlapping histories and entangled urgencies. The fellows developed experimental research within the “Spectral Infrastructure” trajectory, BAK’s long-term collaboration with the freethought collective, through seminars and exchange within and across the cells.

Istanbul cell, coordinated by Zeyno Pekünlü; fellows: Özge Açıkkol, Ilgın Hancıoğlu, İlyas Odman, Marina Papazyan and Kerem Ozan Bayraktar. The research looked at colonial ship mobility through excerpts from captains’ and voyagers’ diaries, shipwreck journalism and history books, with their keywords turned into black-and-white images. It led to the installation Excerpts of Sea Matter.

The fellowship closed with The Hauntologists at BAK, Utrecht, 10 September – 13 November 2022, with Excerpts of Sea Matter in the exhibition and in the public programme. The work was also presented at İKSV Alt Kat, Istanbul, in November 2022.

Araştırma Excerpts of Sea Matter isimli yerleştirmeye dönüştü.

Program, 10 Eylül – 13 Kasım 2022 tarihlerinde BAK, Utrecht’te düzenlenen The Hauntologists ile sona erdi; Excerpts of Sea Matter sergide ve kamusal programda yer aldı. Çalışma Kasım 2022’de İKSV Alt Kat, İstanbul’da da sunuldu.
