PG Art Gallery hosted “[ ]”, an exhibition of the sketchbooks of Funda Alkan, Ceyda Aykan, Kerem Ozan Bayraktar, Elsa Ers Brosh, Can Ertaş, Reysi Kamhi, Ayşecan Kurtay, Sinan Logie, Devran Mursaloğlu, Hale Güngör Oppenheimer, Yağız Özgen, Tunca Subaşı, Candaş Şişman and Ayşe Wilson. The bracket sign relates to the notebook through spacing, opening and going into detail. It opens up the residue of the artist’s visible, linear history, largely shaped by the art market and art history, or the things that may yet take place.
The notebook is the first point where the artist’s thoughts meet the material, free of any concern about being seen, time or place. The exhibition offers a chance to follow the starting points of known works, unrealised projects and the evolution of a project over time, as texts, sketches and collages. Ranging from a quick scribble to “finished” projects, and from handmade to digital notebooks, it looks at the relation of the material to the work, not only the thought.
Shown: a digital sketchbook kept on a tablet. Text in the brochure: “Sketching your work or describing it with a phrase is like taking a photograph, I suppose. You take a snapshot of what’s on your mind in order not to forget. But this is mostly a blurry photograph because the universe of outcomes is infinite, there is so much left to describe. This gap sometimes fills itself in time, and sometimes is left empty. I have doubts about the idea that there is no hierarchy between the sketch and the work. Unless the goal is to present sketches as works of art, nobody wants to present a blurry photograph.”

Pg Art Gallery, Funda Alkan, Ceyda Aykan, Kerem Ozan Bayraktar, Elsa Ers Brosh, Can Ertaş, Reysi Kamhi, Ayşecan Kurtay, Sinan Logie, Devran Mursaloğlu, Hale Güngör Oppenheimer, Yağız Özgen, Tunca Subaşı, Candaş Şişman ve Ayşe Wilson’ın defterlerinin yer aldığı “[ ]” sergisine ev sahipliği yaptı.
