flesh and boneetten, kemikten

“flesh and bone” brings together works that imagine an embodied subjectivity and engage with the body as a becoming that lives, expires, ails, heals, strengthens, withers through various material, historical, social, personal associations and interactions. The exhibition invites the viewer to ponder the body’s powers of becoming, action and exposure, affecting and being affected.

The exhibition points at the historical role the definitions of body and health assume in the construction of social norms and biopolitical domination mechanisms such as colonialism, racism and sexuality. It investigates the possibilities of a wholistic notion of health and healing within practices of living together with earth, soil, vegetation, animal, bacteria, the living and the nonliving. It was the first exhibition of an ongoing series curated by Kevser Güler at Operation Room, the exhibition space of the American Hospital.

“etten, kemikten”, maddesel, tarihsel, toplumsal, çeşitli ilişkilenme, belirlenim ve etkileşim içinde yaşayan, yaşamı son bulan, hastalanan, iyileşen, güç kazanan, güç kaybeden bir var oluş olarak beden ile ilgilenen ve bedenli bir öznelliği tahayyül eden üretimleri bir araya getiriyor. Sergi, bedenin oluş, eyleme ve maruz kalma, etki etme ve etkilenme kuvvetlerini düşünmeye davet ediyor.

Sergi, bedene ve sağlığa dair tanımlamaların, biyopolitik tahakküm mekanizmalarındaki ve toplumsal normların inşasındaki tarihsel rolüne işaret ediyor. Yeryüzüyle, toprakla, bitkiyle, hayvanla, bakteriyle, karmaşık canlı cansız bir arada yaşama pratikleri içinde bütünsel bir sağlık ve şifa düşüncesinin imkanlarını irdeliyor. Kevser Güler’in küratörlüğünde Amerikan Hastanesi’nin sergi mekânı Operation Room’da gerçekleşen sergi, devam eden bir serinin ilki.
