The Istanbul Biennial Production and Research Programme began in October 2018 as a series of consultancies, workshops and seminars for artists and researchers working in art and art-related fields. Over six months, participants attend weekly seminars and workshops, meet an advisor regularly, and present their projects to the Advisory Board in the middle and at the end of the programme. The programme supports in-depth research and production with technical and intellectual help, in an environment of constructive criticism, and encourages unexpected encounters, interdisciplinary work and new collaborations.
First period, 2018–19. The research followed the wild plants of Istanbul, plants nobody grows on purpose, and read the city through them: infrastructure, water networks and waste water, light and shade, soil and architecture, and their effects on each other. The aim was artistic research rather than a scientific result. Notes shared on Instagram as @sokak_otlari became the ongoing project Sokak Otları (Urban Weeds), continued at ZK/U, Berlin, later in 2019.
