SIGNS, a new platform for culture and the arts, opened its space in Levent with the exhibition “Light Like a Bird, Not Like a Feather.” Each work in the exhibition was brought together with inspiration from Italo Calvino. In Six Memos for the Next Millennium, Calvino wrote on Lightness, Quickness, Exactitude, Visibility, Multiplicity and Consistency. The exhibition borrows its title from the line by Paul Valéry that Calvino quotes in his text on Lightness. It proposes to see lightness not as aimlessness or vagueness, but as a sign of precision and determination.

The exhibition brought together works by Alfredo Jaar, Alicja Kwade, Ann Hamilton, Can Küçük, Füsun Onur, Hakkı Anlı, Isaac Julien, Kara Walker, Kerem Ozan Bayraktar, Mübin Orhon, Ömer Pekin, Özlem Günyol & Mustafa Kunt, Silva Bingaz and William Kentridge.

Shown: the wall drawing The Noises of the Garden Among the Noises of the Room (2019), a long sound wave drawn by hand on the gallery wall in the days before the opening.

Yeni bir kültür ve sanat platformu olan SIGNS, Levent’teki mekânını “Light Like A Bird, Not Like A Feather” başlıklı açılış sergisiyle açtı. Sergideki eserlerin her biri, bir edebiyat ikonu olan Italo Calvino’dan alınan ilhamla bir araya gelmiştir. Calvino, Gelecek Binyıl için Altı Öneri adıyla Hafiflik, Hızlılık, Kesinlik, Görünürlük, Çokluk ve Tutarlılık başlıkları altında bir konferans dizisi oluşturmuştur. Sergi, adını Calvino’nun Hafiflik konusundaki metninde Paul Valéry’den alıntıladığı sözden ödünç alırken, hafifliği bir amaçsızlık ya da belirsizlikten ziyade, hassaslık ve kararlılığa işaret eden bir bakışla ele almayı önermektedir.
