Phases of NixNix’in Evreleri

Phases of Nix (2018–19) is an animation inspired by the chaotic rotations of Nix, one of the moons of the dwarf planet Pluto, around its own axis. The video is accompanied by a "Nictian Calendar": a calendar like the ones showing the phases of the Earth's Moon, but useless because of Nix's chaotic rotations.

The shape in the video was designed from the two existing photographs of Nix, and its movement, like an unstable pendulum, was generated with computer scripts containing randomness. The work sets chaotic systems against a traditional understanding of time that believes in continuous cycles and a balance of nature. On a surface where it is technically impossible to know where the sun will rise tomorrow, what other patterns can be used to record time?

The opening on 31 January 2019 included an art talk with Ulya Soley.

“Nix’in Evreleri” (2018–19), cüce gezegen Pluto’nun uydularından birisi olan Nix’in kendi çevresindeki kaotik dönüşlerinden esinlenerek oluşturulmuş bir animasyon. Sergideki videoya aynı zamanda Dünya’nın uydusu Ay’ın evrelerini gösteren takvimlerin bir benzeri fakat Nix’in kaotik hareketinden ötürü işe yaramaz bir takvim olan “Nix Takvimi” görseli eşlik ediyor.

Videodaki kütle Nix’in mevcut iki fotoğrafı referans alınarak tasarlandı. Kararsız bir sarkacı andıran dönüş hareketleri ise rastlantı içeren betiklerle oluşturuldu. Çalışma doğada bir denge ve sürekli bir döngüye inanan geleneksel zaman anlayışımızla kaotik sistemleri birlikte ele alıyor. Güneşin teknik olarak nereden doğacağının bilinmediği bir yüzeyde başka hangi örüntülerle zamanı kaydedebiliriz?
