Temporary Harassment was made for “Portable Art”, part of the Visual Arts Projects of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture. “I decided to merge the aesthetic of Turkish construction sites with that of contemporary installations to create an exhibition strategy that would invade the cultural centre. I would build an organic and heterogeneous platform for the work of eleven artists that would transform the readymade interior spaces without adhering to its architectural parameters.”

“We organized three exhibitions. The first was at the Bülent Ecevit Cultural Centre in Kartal, the second at the Cennet Mahalle Cultural Centre in Küçükçekmece, and the third was in the Atakent Mahallesi Cultural Centre in Ümraniye. A common denominator was that all three were located in peripheral regions at a distance from normal venues for showing contemporary art in Istanbul. We used strips of plywood, cardboard boxes, masking tape and nails to construct a chaotic environment inside the sterile, unexciting and insufficient gallery space of the cultural centres.”

Shown: Entropy (2009), computer animation, 46 seconds, Dolby Digital, made when 3D advertisements for new housing sites were spreading across the city. A snow globe holds anonymous grey concrete buildings. Its pedestal moves a few seconds out of step with the globe, like a mechanical clock, an action that will end. The globe tips over, but the buildings and the snow are not affected by gravity. The soundtrack uses sounds of construction, a motorway and an airport.
