Seminar series, Arter, Istanbul, 2024 Seminer serisi, Arter, İstanbul, 2024

A six-week seminar at Arter, Istanbul, in spring 2024, on the evolution of the perception of reality in art, together with philosophy, history and science. Starting from Nelson Goodman's theory of multiple worlds, the presentations and discussions looked at the worlds art has made through history and the ways meaning takes shape in them.

Drawing on several theoretical frameworks, the seminar explored formal approaches, processes of abstraction and systemic methods, and stressed the dynamic nature of art and meaning-making. It worked with selected works from the Arter Collection and with examples of contemporary art from Turkey and elsewhere, with exercises in each session.

I. Making Sense of Contemporary Art (30 April)
An introduction to contemporary artworks and meaning: the weight of ideas, context and the artist’s choices over traditional aesthetic qualities, and the role of experience and the viewer’s worldview. Nelson Goodman’s distinction between autographic and allographic arts, and Arthur Danto’s artworld.

II. Ways of Worldmaking (7 May)
Goodman’s Languages of Art and Ways of Worldmaking, and his irrealism: reality built through symbol systems, and many worlds, none more “real” than another. The ways artists make worlds (composition, weighting, ordering, deletion and supplementation, deformation), read through contemporary works.

III. The Construction of Reality (14 May)
Works from earlier periods set beside contemporary ones, to trace the making of the idea of “one world” and its critiques: experiment and observation in the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, and maps and artworks that pictured the world as a whole.

IV. Formal Relations (21 May)
The paradigm shifts in science, philosophy and art that led to formalism in the first half of the twentieth century, from relativity and quantum mechanics to abstraction. Artworks as embodiments of formal structures, and as acts of mapping.

V. From Static Objects to Complex Worlds (28 May)
Movements against formalism that built art from meanings and systems instead of the look of objects. Systems Art and its attention to the environment over the object, close to Goodman’s “worlds”.

VI. Dissolving Boundaries (4 June)
Hybrid forms of production and shifting artist roles inherited from the 1960s. Artists today as worldmakers who study the systems we use to perceive, code and build the world around us.

Seminer, çeşitli kuramsal çerçevelerden yararlanarak farklı biçimsel yaklaşımları, soyutlama süreçlerini ve sistemik yöntemleri inceledi; sanat ve anlam üretiminin dinamik yapısını vurguladı. Arter Koleksiyonu'ndan seçilen yapıtların yanı sıra Türkiye'den ve dünyadan çağdaş sanat örneklerine odaklandı ve her oturum alıştırmalarla desteklendi.

I. Çağdaş Sanatın Anlamlandırılması (30 Nisan)
