Reading the Environment from Within
Workshop, Erasmus+ Teaching Mobility, Minerva Art Academy
2026A week-long workshop at Minerva Art Academy (Hanze University of Applied Sciences), Groningen, hosted by Luuk Schröder during an Erasmus+ Teaching Mobility, 13 to 17 April 2026. The workshop introduced four attention modes as a framework for engaged field observation.
Students selected their own sites for fieldwork. The primary field trip went to ’t Nije Hemelriek, a former sand mine turned nature reserve on the outskirts of Groningen, where groups worked on site for a half day exploring the landscape through their assigned mode. The week concluded with individual student tutorials and final presentations, with outcomes ranging from artist books and archival assemblages to site-specific objects.
Each group carried one attention mode into the site:
- Forces and Traces. What forces are at work here, and what have they left behind? Output: a self-invented field typology.
- Materials and Space. What materials are here, how do they resist and organize, and how do they constitute space? Output: a material genealogy.
- Time and Change. What different temporal states coexist here? How do the past, the present, and possible futures become perceptible? Output: a temporal inventory.
- Zones and Transitions. Where do different conditions meet? Where are the thresholds, and how are they experienced? Output: a map score.
